Aquaculture is the cultivation of aquatic animals and/or plants in a controlled environment for all or part of their life cycle. The farming and husbandry of freshwater and marine organisms has been practised for centuries. Aquaculture can make a unique contribution to nutrition in many parts of the world by virtue of its extremely high productivity and the fact that aquatic crops are primarily protein crops rather than sources of starch. Currently, 75 percent of ocean fisheries are either at their limits or are over-fished, and total fish catch has levelled off at about 85 million metric tons per year. Global fish consumption is increasing as more and more people add seafood to their diets; and with the imminent population growth facing our planet today, this trend should not slow anytime soon. The imbalance between our stagnant ocean fisheries and the ever increasing demand for fish has opened the gateway for the aquaculture industry. The status and trends of fresh water and marine aquaculture are elaborately described in this book. It provides readers a clear and authentic understanding of aquaculture industry and its diversity; myriad aquaculture techniques in use today, the potential benefits and problems of aquaculture and how aquaculture affects the environment.
