Geology of Kerala offers many interesting features, such as easily accessible exposures of exhumed lower continental crust, amphibolite-granulite transition zone, classical exposures of laterite and interesting geomorphic features. However, the literature on geology has not advanced in proportion to its importance. Students of geology, soil scientists, civil and irrigation engineers have been on the look out for a concise review paper on the geology and geomorphology of Kerala. Feeling this necessity, and on the advise from Prof. C. Karunakaran, founder Director of the Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS), a professional paper on "Geology of Kerala" was brought out in 1980 by the author. Since then, the literature and database have been under constant updating, and the present volume is the culmination of that effort. This volume attempts to gather together much of our knowledge on the geology, geomorphology and mineral resources of Kerala State, and identifies gaps in our knowledge about its geology for undertaking future research. However, for reasons of coherence, certain amount of published literature could not be accommodated in this.
