Ethnography is a form of research focusing on the sociology of meaning through close field observation of sociocultural phenomena. Typically, the ethnographer focuses on a community, selecting informants who are known to have an overview of the activities of the community. The ethnographic method starts with selection of a culture, review of the literature pertaining to the culture, and identification of variables of interest–typically variables perceived as significant by members of the culture. India is the home to large number of indigenous people, who are still untouched by the lifestyle of the modern world. With more than 100 million, India has the largest population of the tribal people in the world. These tribal people also known as the Adivasi's are the poorest in the country, who are still dependent on haunting, agriculture and fishing. The aim of this encyclopaedia is to highlight the physical, historical, social, political, economic, religious and cultural life of Indian tribes.
