Microelectronics is a key discipline which plays a vital role in communication technology, information technology, space science and technology, photonics, defence and several other important areas. It has led to revolutionary changes in the medical field. Indeed no sphere of human activity is untouched by Microelectronics and information technology. Developments in this field are taking place at a very high speed. In view of these factors all the developing countries are aspiring to establish strong base for microelectronics R and D and production. However, it needs high quality manpower and infrastructure. For this purpose decision makers have to be fully aware of different aspects.
In order to review state-of-the-art of research and development in micro-and nano-scale phenomena, devices, systems and manufacturing, the NAM S and T Centre organized an International Workshop-cum-Training Course on Microelectronics with a focal theme on 'Micro and Nano electronics and Photonics' during 9-13 April 2007 at Islamabad, Pakistan. Scientists from developed as well as developing countries actively participated in its deliberations. Latest developments in several aspects were reviewed by well known experts. Also, country reports were presented which described efforts being made in different countries. This publication includes 18 scientific articles and review papers on various aspects of Microelectronics. This publication would be useful for the entire scientific community of the microelectronics researchers, experts and practitioners particularly from the developing countries and will help in promoting microelectronics through North-South and South-South Cooperation.
