The book "Society and Legislature: Social Background of Assam Legislative Assembly", is an outcome of serious research work done by Jogendra Kr. Das. The book is an attempt to analyze the Assam Legislative Assembly from a sociological perspective. Several studies of legislative elites particularly analyzing their social background have been conducted in the country since independence. But the present study is somewhat different as the state of Assam is not only a border state but it has also passed through a turbulent period in recent years. In fact the Assam Movement in particular changed the character of power elite in Assam. The movement provided an alternative leadership of young men and women, which was unprecedented in the political history of Assam. The Assam Movement was a sort of revolution against the established order and the old guards in politics and set up a newer dimension in society and politics of the state, which the book has taken into account.
The book has penetrated into a new field of study successfully in the context of Assam, which may also be relevant to Indian state politics. The fundamental merit of the study lies in generating primary data based on rigorous fieldwork. The author has successfully balanced the data and its analysis. The author has taken into account the political situations prior to Assam Movement and prior to India's National Movement. He has compared the movement and the post-movement situations to establish interlinkages in these three different phases of political development in Assam. The author also provides useful information about the state of Assam highlighting its development in relation to other states of the country. The interesting feature of the book is that it not only explore the socio-economic, cultural and political background of the legislators, i.e. the legislative politics, but also their various forms of socio-politico-administrative roles for Assam society, which have greater sociological significance. The book consists of nine chapters distributed in three major parts. The contents are rich with valuable facts and findings. Hence, the study is quite interesting and a very positive contribution to the disciplines political science, political sociology, anthropology and sociology. The study is interdisciplinary in nature.
