This book attempts to throw light on the major preoccupations of the 19th century American novelists, This is not an exhaustive study of the vast topic to which it addresses itself. It attempts to relate the major four writers to the age and show how they gave expression to the problems of the age in their works. All the four novelists reflect the tensions, dilemmas and the problems of the age.
