In order to utilize the efforts made by public sector in exploiting the hybrid vigour of field crops, a commensurate strategy has to be in place. The ultimate aim of any technology in the field of agriculture is to obtain sustainable increase in crop production to feed burgeoning world population. The progress made in exploitation of hybrid vigour in the public sector is not properly exploited for the benefit of farmers in reference to present era. This is a serious issue, which needs to be looked into in national interest to fulfill the food requirement on sustainable manner with affiliation of public and private sectors. The objective of the book is to promote public – bred hybrids by developing farmer-preferred, improved hybrid of crops; Knowledge empowerment of seed producer in hybrid seed production; to strengthen seed production chain in public sector seed system; to establish linkage between informal and formal seed sectors; research backstopping for further improvement of hybrids for resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses; to suggest policy and institutional changes, to ensure supply of quality seed of hybrids; and to stabilize the local seed supply and diffusion systems of improved hybrids. The views of the renowned scientists actively engaged in exploitation of hybrid vigour in respective crops covering above objectives are presented in this book based on the presentations made during the National Seminar entitled Strategies for commercialization of public – bred hybrids in India on February 23-24, 2008 organized by JN Agriculture University, at Jabalpur (MP) India. This book contains 14 chapters depicting views of the scientist actively engaged in research and heading the institute/project for making policy of the respective crops in public and private sectors. Major purpose of the publication is to highlight the bottlenecks in commercialization of public bred hybrids and their remedies with strategies for bright scenario.
