An international conference on Transportation System Studies was organized at the Walchand Hirachand Unit in Transport Economics, Dept. of Economics, University of Mumbai, India, during January 2008. Expert delegates from all over India as well as South Africa, Canada, and Sudan participated in the Conference and presented their research papers on various sub-themes. This publication compiles a selection of 32 of these papers. Ranging from theoretical issues in transport modeling to transport accessibility, urban transport planning, development of transport infrastructure, GIS based transportation, spatial decentralization, environmental impact of transport systems, transport project evaluation methodologies, etc., a variety of themes and topics are covered in these papers. The compilation includes a number of empirical case studies pertaining to transport systems in different metropolitan cities of India.
