In the contemporary era, religion is re-emerging as a critical ingredient in individual and national identity. Indian religion is inextricable linked with culture, and conversion becomes a twin assault upon the religious divinities of the target group as well as its cultural traditions, kinship and social ties.

Sandhya Jain is a writer of political and contemporary affairs and writes a fortnightly column for The Pioneer, New Delhi. A postgraduate in Political Science from Delhi University, Jain received a Fellowship from the K.K. Birla Foundation for research on the Tribal-Hindu interface from a civilizational perspective.
