The period from 18 to 20 century is considered as the Golden Era in the history of Karnatic Music, both from the Lakshya and Lakshana aspects. The period witnessed the emergence of innumerable number of compositions having variety and vividity. The long lineage of great vaggeyakaras enriched the rich treasury of Karnatic music with their umpteen number of kritis. The musical contributions of composers ranging from Annamacharya to Mysore Vasudevachar form a link in preserving our rich musical heritage. The kritis are of great significance from the musical and literary point of view. This rich and great musical heritage has been applauded in musical concerts.
It has been my constant effort to collect the popular as well as rare kritis of both popular and less popular composers out of academic interest. The present volume is a humble attempt of mine to present the beautiful and illustrious select compositions of eminent vaggeyakaras of medieval and modern times to the lovers and students of carnatic music. These compositions have been selected on account of their scope for beautiful rendering and excellent sahitya as well as musical aspects. Compositions of Annamacharya, Bhadrachala Ramadasa, Ramanathapuram Srinivasa Iyengar, Pallavi Sesha Iyer, Subbaraya Sastri, Veena Kuppayyar, Mysore Vasudevachar, and G N Balasubramoniam are included in this book. In the introduction a short biography and a brief evaluation of their contribution has been highlighted. The compositions of the musical trinity which are part of the heritage have already been dealt in different Volumes.
