Wild silk is very vital biological resource and has a very crucial role in economic and social development of mankind. Wild silk is better than other silks from the view point of healthcare. Therefore, the book contain taxonomy of wild silkmoths, under which 9 new subspecies of Antheraea mylitta have been described for avoiding confusion with ecoraces which refer to Antheraea mylitta indica, A.m. jujubi, a.m. arjuni, A.m. greyi, A.m. Kolhapurensis, A.m. Koynei, A.m. Sathei, A.M. badami and A.M. sahyadricus. The book also contains biology of wild silkmoths Attacus atlas (Linn.), Actias selene hubner and A.M. Kolhapurensis. Rearing techniques for A. Atlas, A. selene and A.M. Kolhapurensis with different food plants and their assessment by food consumption potential/cocoon characterization and development rate has given special emphasis in the book. Thus, the book is unique on biodiversity of wild silkmoths and the wild silk technology which will be very helpful for students, teachers, farmers, sericulturists and researchers in India at global scenario.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR T V Sathe
Dr. Sathe Tukaram Vithalrao [M.Sc., Ph.D., Sangit Visharad, IBT (Seri.), F.S.E.Sc., F.I.S.E.C.], Professor in Entomology, Department of Zoology, Department of Zoology, Shivaji University, Kolhapur has teaching experience of 22 years in entomology. He is contributory teacher for M.Sc. courses in Department of Agrochemicals, Pest Management and Sericulture. He has published 165 research papers and 22 books viz., Preet Patangachi (drama, 1981), Crop Protection from Insects (Marathi), Sericultural Cropo Protection (1998), Biological Pest Control (2000), Cotton Pests and Biocontrol Agents (2001), Insects Pest Predators (2001), Sericulture and Pest Management (2001), Agrochemicals and Pest Management (2003), Insect Predators and Pest Management (2003), Vermiculture and Organic Farming (2004), Basic Entomology (2005), Fundamentals of Beekeeping (2006), Forest Entomology: A Textbook (2008), etc. He guided 15 Ph.D. students, completed 4 major research projects (from CSIR, UST, UGC). He visited Canada (1988), Japan (1988), Thailand (2002, 2004), Spain (2005), France (2005), South Korea (2006), Nepal (2007) for academic work. He is member of editorial board of several journals in India and involved in T.V. programming of butterflies and moths. He has published several popular articles in daily newspapers and delivered talks through All India Radio. He got several prestigious awards "Environmentalists of the Year-2003", "Bharat Jyoti Award-2006", "Jewel of India Award-2006", "Lifetime Education Achievement Award-2006", "Lifetime Achievement Award-2007", "International Gold Star Award-2007", "Eminent Citizen of India Award-2007" etc. He also got fellowships from several scientific societies.
