Improving the lot of teaming millions and establishing society on socialistic pattern has been one of the proclaimed objectives of free India. The direction of Development Project in free India, towards this goal emanates from the Preamble of Indian Constitution, get delineated in its directive principle of state policy and sets down in very objectives of Indian economic planning. IN the light of these facts the removal of unemployment and poverty in general and uplift of agricultural labour the direct producer and the poorest among the poor-was set as an objective to find urgent attentions of the planners and policy makers. It was first thought that growing industrialization of the country would lessen the burden of population on the land in rural areas and would lead to labour demand which in turn, with rising productivity, would increase in rural wages and thus uplift the level of agricultural labour. This hope got strengthened with the start of green revolution based on modernization of agriculture with technological diffusion. The process of development was reinforced by launching the target oriented programmes of poverty removal.
But the acute level of disparity continuously existed n the process of overall economic growth as well as, particularly, in regard to spread of green revolution. Thus, the phenomena of agricultural labour migration come to surface in a big way. In the lagging agricultural regions it was realized that migrant agricultural labour were not gaining in any significant manner by migrating to agriculturally developed regions whereas the agriculturist of the regions were facing problems of labour shortages. The study presented in this book have explored the various issues related to agricultural labour in a backward agricultural region of India, the main habitat and poverty stricken agricultural labour.
