Andhra Pradesh is one of the Southern States in India having largest tribal population. Visakhapatnam district is one among the nine districts in the state having sizeable tribal population and largest Scheduled area. The tribal communities in the district represent different levels of socio-economic development. Though, both Central and State Governments have implemented number of programmes for the development of tribal people, they have not yet reached the expected level of development. Every year number and deaths takes place because of malaria and other vial fevers. Besides, in recent past, tribals staged dharnas and undertook other forms of agitations against bauxite mining by Indian and foreign multinational companies as they feel concerned about their livelihood and rights over the land. These two issues made to study the impact of globalization process on the tribal people in general and tribal women in particular in Visakhapatnam agency area. The present study explores whether bauxite mining will suit or harm the tribes by analyzing its impact on their livelihood and employment. The study also examines the steps taken by to improve the education and health status of the tribals in general and tribal women in p1iadarto meet the challenges of the globalization process. The book is divided into nine chapters. The first four chapters create the background for the study by describing the process of globalization and its impact on tribal people and tribal women in particular, the programmes undertaken by the Central and State Governments during various five year plans, the fourth chapter explains the socioeconomic profile of tribals in Visakhapatnam district. Fifth chapter explains the methodology adopted for the study. Sixth chapter analyses the livelihood pattern of the households under study area: the bauxite mining areas in Visakhapatnam district The seventh and eighth chapters are core chapters. The seventh chapter evaluates the implementation process of the education and health programmes implemented in the area. Besides, it also evaluates the implementation process of the bauxite mining in the agency area of Visakhapatnam. The eighth chapter evaluates the impact of education, health and bauxite mining programmes on the lives of tribal people in the context of globalization using performance criteria. The Ninth chapter summarizes the conclusions and suggests the alternatives.
