In spite of advance in modern technology and man-made substitutes, mankind still depends on plants for survival, and on plant materials for food, clothing and shelter almost everyday. In addition, the plants of the earth’s ecosystems have proven to be mankind’s medicine chests. Since the establishment of vectormediated and direct gene transfer systems in recent years, the production of genetically engineered plants has advanced rapidly and has become an indispensable component of the methodological repertorie in virtually all aspects of experimental plant biology.
