English is comparatively a younger language, still it has a colorful history of its own. In fact the history of the English language really started with the arrival of three Germanic tribes. These tribes, the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes, crossed the North Sea. Angles came from Englaland and their language was called Englisc from which the words, England and English are derived. The invading Germanic tribes spoke similar languages which in Britain developed into Old English. Then, the language developed gradually it became dominant in Britain and was called Middle English . Later, due to the expansion of British empire English evolved into an international language and was named modern English. This standard language is popular the world over as the link language for academic diplomatic and business purposes. Today apart from United Kingdom, English is the official language of several countries and prevalent in many others.
