In the 1970s more sophisticated transmission techniques were invented employing optical fiber cable and computer technology. Japan succeeded in designing a computer controlled network to carry two way video information to and from households. The audiovisual cassette and the video tape recorder closed circuit TV, and more recently cable television pay television and DTH direct to home television have changed the course of the development of TV in new and unexpected ways. DTH and digital compression technology have enhanced the number of channels which an be accessed as also the quality of picture and sound transmission.
