The book is first of its kind in which the comparative analyses of ceramics have been carried out. The work carried out on Padri and Anarta cultures have made important contributions in the Harappan study of Gujarat. For the comparative analyses a new pottery drawing style has been adopted in which the traditional method of line drawings has been combined with the photography using computer software’s. The work done in this book highlights the nature of site and geographical importance of the region and its relation with urbanism and urban processes. The regional climate and environment directly impacts the economy of the region and it is reflected in the archaeological material of the region. The poor economy helps the cultures to live long compare to the urban centers and this is well reflects in the region of Saurashtra. The region has Early Harappan settlements which are limited in numbers but has quite large number of Mature or Sorath Harappan settlements. These settlements are smaller in size and poor in the material culture as compared to the urban centers. These are mostly small agro-pastoral Harappan settlements. During the Late Harappan period the number of settlements increases tremendously this is not due to the migration but mostly due to the nature of region. The introduction of millets in this area helped the population survive during the Late Harappan period and due to which the number of settlements are more in this region. The book has emphasized on the cultural process in the region rather than compartmented cultural historical process.
