This volume is based on selected papers from two conferences on Bangladesh at Harvard University in 2008 and 2009. It covers a variety of challenging topics, ranging fromlinkages between democracy and security to effects of a given electoral system on political stability, micro-national autonomy for sub-regional peace, terrorism and its counter-forces. It also covers the role of NGOs in development and social change, intra-regional cooperation in conflict mitigation, and refugee related violence in South Asia.
A common theme that runs through the eight chapter of this volume is the felt need for multidimensional interactions in the continuous search for a common ground on which negotiations could take place for the resolutions of issues, problems and conflicts at different socio-political and economic levels. Papers selected for the present volume were edited to form chapterers and the contributors comprise academics, policy implementers, researchers and consultants. The quest for understanding the complex process of democratization for sustainable, multifacted political development of Bangladesh.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Syed Saad Andaleeb
Ph.D. is Distinguished Professor and Program Chair of Marketing at the Sam & Irene Black School of Business at Pennsylvania State University, Erie, USA. He is editor of the Journal of Bangladesh Studies. Dr. Andaleeb has published in prestigious international journals.
He has been on the Editorial Board of International Journal of Health Care Quality Assurance, Journal of International Consumer Marketing, Journal of Knowledge Globalization, and Journal of Transnational Management Development. He has also been Senior Fulbrigh Fellow in 2003 and a Senior Fulbright Specialist in 2005 and 2006.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Zillur R. Khan
Ph.D, is Rosebush Professor Emeritus of the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, USA. He served as Chair of Political Science Department (1987-1999), President of Faculty Senate (1990-1991), Coordinator of Asian Studies (1987-1990).
Professor Khan is Adjunct Professor at Rollins College, Florida, USA. He has published several books, contributed chapters and scholarly articles in regional and international journals. His publications include The Third World Charismat: Sheikh Mujib and the Struggle for Freedom (UPL,1996) and SAARC and the Superpowers (UPL, 1991). His forthcoming edited volume, South Asia Bridging the World will be published by UPL in 2011.
