The volume presents the exhibition ‘Rediscovering India: 1961-2011’ organised by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in December 2011 to showcase the ancient past of the country through artefacts, photographs and write-ups. The exhibition involved a display of objects recovered from excavations and explorations conducted by the ASI and pertained to various periods ranging from the pre-Harappan to the medieval times. The publication thus presents a comprehensive account of the development of Indian culture and society through the centuries. The essays present an overview of the achievements of the ASI. The exhibits are classified into separate sections pertaining to the prehistoric period, the Early Historic period, the late historical and medieval periods and the modern period. There are brief descriptions of the exhibits that throw light on their nature and significance.
