This book presents a comprehensive account of art and archaeology of Braj region which covers a wide area in and around Mathura district, Uttar Pradesh in India. The area of Mathura is world famous for its art heritage but till recently no comprehensive archaeological record is available for this region. It is for the first time that this book is bringing out the data of this very important region which includes about a thousand explored sites and hundreds of terracottas and sculptures discovered from various sites and villages in the area of about 11,500 square km taken up for field surveys. An analysis of settlement pattern and the probable ancient routes has been done which provides several very interesting facts. Some of the Saiva, Vais?n?ava, Sakta and other Brahman?ical sculptures including Surya, Gan?esa, Skanda, Yaks?as are too important to be overlooked and provide some new vistas in iconographical research. In the area of Buddhism and Jainism also, the book provides very important data, including identification of ancient sites and a broader picture of these religions in the area concerned along with new sculptural finds belonging to these sects. The book, supported with notes, references and bibliography are well illustrated and tries to overcome many shortcomings related with information of art and archaeology of the Braj region.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Vinay Kumar Gupta

Vinay Kumar Gupta, born at Mathura on 24th November 1981 is doing research in the region of Mathura for many years. He has been a bright student throughout his carrier, always passing the examinations with first division. After obtaining his BSc degree from Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University (formerly Agra University), he completed his M.A. in Archaeology and Heritage Management from Indraprastha University, Delhi in 2003, standing first in the order of merit. He then completed Post Graduate Diploma in Archaeology from the Institute of Archaeology, N. Delhi where he first in the entrance examination. He also qualified U.G.C.-J.R.F./NET in archaeology in his first attempt. As a research scholar he is working on the topic "Braj: An Art and Archaeological Study" from National Museum Institute. He has made exploratory surveys in the region of Braj for past many years and has gathered a lot of new information related with art, archaeology and the settlement pattern of the region, along with more than 500 new archaeological sites. He has a number of research papers and articles published to his credit. After the publication of his first book, it is expected that he would be able to carve a niche for himself in the scholarly world.
