The book analyses laws that have been framed and implemented for the protection of women from violence. It recognises and addresses the existence of domestic violence in all its forms including the ‘relationships in the nature of marriage’ which are, however, not marriage. Comparing laws in India with those elsewhere, it deals with the Constitutonal provisions regarding elimination of gender-based discrimination. It examines the penal laws with regard to sexual abuse and dowry death in India and violence in live-in relationships. It takes up issues of maintenance for the wife who is ‘married but not legally wed’ and the rights of children. It includes a detailed study of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, beginning with a definition of domestic relationship and domestic violence and then analysing the role and powers of protection officers and service providers in this regard and procedure of obtaining orders of relief.
