Information and communication technologies (ICT) have transformed the functioning of modern libraries in the 21st century. The applications of ICT to data, information and knowledge resources have given rise to data centres, digital libraries, and knowledge repositories. New software’s that are based on international standards have emerged to undertake a wide range of jobs that suit the requirements of individual libraries. Rapid advances in the application of ICT have given rise to ‘Open Standards and Open Source Softwares. Librarise can benefit a great deal now by using these standards and softwares, as during the last twenty-five years only rich librarise could afford to use commercial softwere. As a result the transformation of libraries was not universal in india. Now with the advent of open source softwares, we expect that emerging as a major activity of libraries around the world. Librarise will be able to use resources of pther librarise throught national and international networks in order to serve their users well.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Paramjit Singh Kawatradid
Paramjit Singh Kawatradid his B.Sc. and secured first class first in Post- graduate Degree course in Library & Information Science from Nagpur University in 1969. He also received his M.A. in Sociology from Bhopal University (1972) and M.Lib. Sc. from Panjab University (1947). He has been awarded Ph.D. in Library and Information Science from University of Rajasthan, Jaipur (1989).
He has worked in several responsible positions, such as Librarian, Durga Mahavidyalaya (Post-Graduate College), Raipur; Technical Teacher's Training Institute, Bhopal; Regional Instiyute of Education, Bhubaneswar and Ajmer and Reference and Imformation Officer, British "Council Library, New Delhi and as retired Head , Division of Library, Documentation and Inmformation, National Council of Educational Research and decades. He is research guide for Master of Philosophy in Library Science & Information Studies for distance education for Annamalai and Alagappa University
He is the author of Fundementals of Documentation (Third Edition) and Library User Studies and the Edition of Compaarative and International Librarianship, Dictioonary of Library Science, World Encyclopedia of Library and Information Science Educational (in three Volumes), The Library and Infomation Studies Handbook and A Dictionary of Acronyms and Abbreviations in (Education Information and Computer Science, Directory of Academic Institutions in India and The 3-in-1 joy. )
