"The third dream was a world-union forming the outer basis of a fairer, brighter and nobler life for all mankind. That unification of the human world is under way; there is an imperfect initiation organised but struggling against tremendous difficulties. But the momentum is there and it must invitably increase and conquer".
These words were written in 1947 by Sri Aurobindo, two years after the end of the second world war, which laid huge areas of the earth into ruins, when the new atomic weapons unleashed for the first time their devastating power and when the voices for freedom of the people still under colonial power became increasingly lounder.
The book aoms to look at his vast vision for humanity, on one hand, and on the other hand, it looks at the evolution of the United Nations with its roots in the League of Nations and its background of world wars. It is an attempt to understand the history of some of the main instiutions under the UN and how they have evolved as well as the various involvements of the United Nations today: securing peace on various levels and seeking fair framework conditions for all its members, such as in finance, trade or poverty reducation. A special reference has been made to the European Union as the only supranational organization so far which is political and economic with social and cultural implications that go beyond nation-states.
