Arguing that the achievements of the United Nations Development Programme are usually overshadowed by the UN’s political and other activities, this volume showcases the contributions of the UNDP which was established in 1966 as a neutral and universal organisation providing Grants-Aid in the form of technical assistance to developing countries in order to foster institution-building, encourage capacity building, aid in sustained human development and eradicate poverty. It provides a coherent account of the UNDP’s evolution, major policies and changes in them, its trends in performance, and issues relating to resource mobilisation from major donor countries and their impact on the programme. Presenting various data including statistics on the UNDP, it examines the reasons for the drop in core resources of the UNDP over the decades, difficulties in ensuring effectiveness of its aid and problems involved in impact and outcome evaluations for the type of work UNDP does.
