Christianity and De-Politicization of Naga Movement

Christianity is the single most dynamic factor that affected the social and politival institutions in North East India in general and to the Nagas in particular. It did not only leave its impavt on the social and politival institutions but significantly imbued on the cultural practices of the people. This book seeks to enquire into the role of Christianity in de-politicization of Naga nationalism. Describing the social, political and religious aspects of Naga life, such as family, clans, dormitory system, marriage, position of women, practice of head-hunting, village administration, and religious beliefs and rites, it analyzes the impact of colonial rule on the Naga world. It also traces the emergence of Christian missionaries in the Northeast India and their role in persuading Nagas to embrace Christianity. The role of Church in politics and piece process in the region has been examined as well. The intrusion of church in the political arena leaves the trail of de-politicization and therefore poses challenge to the fortification of political legitimacy.
