Sri Lanka is regarded as a biodiversity hotspot of the world. The National Red List of Threatened Fauna and Flora 2012 evaluates all flowering plants, ferns, terrestrial vertebrates and major groups of invertebrates in the country. The volume presents this National Red List: lists of various insects, invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals as well as pteridophytes and other flora. It includes the present status of dry zone, lowland wet zone, montane forests, fresh water aquatic flora, mangroves and family Orchidaceae. The lists provide provisional checklist of various faunal species. The nomenclature of the fauna is based on the latest published literature available. The research work has involved expert committees for different fauna, and data compilation and preparation of maps and draft evaluations carried out by the Species Conservation Unit and presented to the individual expert groups for final evaluation.
