Through the study of interpretation and the sources of literature, it discusses the significance of Puranas, history of medieval Indian literature, classical Sanskrit literature, early Dravidian literature, women poets of Bhakti, 19th century Indian renaissance, emergence of nationalism and literature related to it, reformism and revivalism, and Indian romanticism.
It also deals with the advent of Mahatma Gandhi, making of modern theatre, Indian literary scenario after independence, dalit literature, and use of mythology. Some well known poems, essays, plays and writers of each regional literature have been discussed in the book as well.
