This book focuses on the status of urban basic services i.e., housing, water supply, sanitation and electricity and public utility services i.e. educational, health, commercial sociasl, recreational, industrial and roads in the residential suburbs of Aligarh, a medium sized city located in the western part Uttar Pradesh. in the fertile tract of Ganga-Yumuna doab. It includes the appraisal of urbanization processes and expansion of the city suburban landuse changes, development of residential colonies and public utility-services, provision of urban basic sendees in the residential colonies, problems of residential suburbs and finally demarcation and mapping of residential suburbs according to different levels of services, demarcation of planning zones for suggesting suitable measures for providing a livable environment in the suburbs.
The book is mainly based on primary sources of data which have been collected through village/households surveys with the help of questionnaire interviews.
O For assessing the expansion of Aligarh city and development of suburbs satellite data were used.
An important finding which has emerged from the study is that urban expansion is ubiquitous. It has posed the most profound challenges to the government and planners. Essentially the problem is one of urban infrastructure being unable to develop to keep pace with urban growth and expansion.
