The second seminar of Petroliferous Basins of India (SPEB-2) was held during 18th to 20th December, 1991, 8 years after the first seminar which was held in 1983. The main objective of holding such seminars is to disseminate the vast amount of data and information gathered through various activities related to exploration for hydrocarbon in the sedimentary basins of India. The response to the first seminar was overwhelming. Encouraged by this, it was decided that such seminars should be held every 4 years. However, for various reasons no seminar could be held in 1987. Like the first Seminar, there had been an encouraging response in the second seminar also. The seminar was participated by 280 delegates. About 130 scientific papers were received out of which 98 papers were selected for publications in the proceedings volumes of the seminar. Out of these 98 papers, 40 papers were presented in the 3 day seminar. The papers were presented in 10 technical sessions, out of which first 5 sessions were devoted to the topic – Hydrocarbon Exploration : Status and Leads. The other 5 technical sessions were held on the following topics: 1. Tectonics; 2. Stratigraphy; 3. Geochemistry; 4. Prospect Analysis & Exploration Methodology and 5. Concepts and Techniques. In the proceedings now being published in 3 volumes, the papers are grouped geographically as follows: Volume 1: Eastern margin, Andaman and Assam Arakan basins. This first volume starts with a paper on the classification of the sedimentary basins of India. Volume 2: Western margin basins and Volume 3: Himalayan foothills, Vindhyan and Gondwana basins together with papers on geoscientific studies and hydrocarbon exploration techniques. The papers were selected to give information about most of the important aspects of the 38 Sedimentary Basins of India including the proved petroliferous basins. We sincerely hope that these volumes will meet the objectives of the seminar.
