The North-east region has the highest proportion of literate youth in rural areas and many are self-employed in non-agricultural activities. This is a study on readership, media usage patterns and exposure to media of literate youth in North-east India. It deals with the demographic features and socio-economic characteristics of the region. It then explores the reading habits of the youth, causes for them and influences on the youth. It views aspects relating to broad genre of books read, time and frequency of reading leisure books, youth’s perceptions regarding reading of books, and library membership and visits to libraries by the youth. It comments on the preferred language for reading; interest and information level of literate youth; their perception of issues like environmental pollution and global warming, biodiversity, and caste-based reservation; and role of publishing houses in society.
