This compendium of 27 papers, presented at a national seminar, organized by Lakhimpur Commerce College, Assam, attempts to address the issue of women empowerment in India, with special reference to the North-East region. Contextualizing gender and work, it examines the role of Self-Help Groups in the empowerment of women.
Taking a close look at the employment opportunities for women in rural economy, it discusses at length the participation of women in rural development, women empowerment through microfinance, the role of NREGA in women empowerment, the community rights of women, women health and reproductive behaviour, domestic violence against women, and women education for their socio-economic development. The impact of displacement on women has also been assessed.
