This Book India’s Billion Plus People presents the first results of the 2001 census of India in a user-friendly manner. Part one describes briefly the houselisting operation and the enumeration as well as the new features of this census. Part two gives demographic profile of India and the 28 States and 7 Union Territories, grouped in ten categories, according to their unique characteristics. Part three deals with the implications of the census results. Part four is focused on census methodology and in particular, the definition and concept of ‘worker’ specially the female worker. Part five is devoted to media and the census. It puts together news items, editorials and special articles in 14 newspapers, magazines and journals. This Book, brought out in less than a month after the publication of the provisional tables of 2001 census, should be indispensable to planners, policy makers and administrators, as well as the general public in understanding the demographic situation in India.
