Sona is a completely wild tigress, minutely observed by the author who also has the gift of creating the whole forest scene around Sona and her cubs. One can almost hear the varied birds calling, and the strange rustling on the forest floor. The ambience of the whole forest area is engagingly brought to vivid life as Sona ambles along quietly on her journey through life. How the writer manages to get into the mind of a tiger living wild like this is difficult to guess, but he does so, and superbly. So realistically does he create the scenes that one can easily imagine seeing Sona’s descendants enjoying the forest life today. If the "cri du coeur" at the end of the book is heeded, tigers will be successfully breeding in all our forests, meeting all sorts of animals, birds, and situations and battling against adversity just as Sona did long ago. There is plenty of extremely useful material here for scientific researchers as not only are the tigers’ lives accurately portrayed, but also the details of the area’s complete eco-system, by one of India’s foremost forest conservators.
