The economy, the society, the culture and many other aspects of our daily life and livelihood are integrally connected with the river-ecology of Bengal. But it is unfortunate that many, if not most, of the people of the State are at best indifferent, and at the worst, grossly negligent about the condition of the rivers. As a matter of fact, the rivers are in decay due to a host of factors like sedimentation, deforestation in catchment area, indiscriminate exploitation of groundwater, and building of dams, barrages and embankment.
