This is an account of the journey of British commander-in-chief in India, General George Nugent and his wife, Maria across colonial India visiting British military stations. The journey involved the encounter of Maria Nugent with a number of prominent figures of the time, especially Indian royal personages. This critical edition contextualises her East Indian Journal, which is an account of her interactions in India, within the history of India and the British Empire and the tradition of travel writing. It shows that her account offers a glimpse into the intimate social and domestic worlds of households in British India. It also compares her account on India with that on her voyage to Jamaica earlier as recorded in her West Indian Journal.
