Mehrauli is an ancient township with written record of over 1200 years of regular settlement. It enjoys the status of being the first of seven cities of Delhi. There appears to be some confusion or contradiction regarding number of cities of Delhi. Some historians noted the number of cities as seven and some others as ten and this number of cities goes upto 16. Turning the pages of medieval history of Delhi determines over 100 significant settlements in the entire region of Delhi out of which Mehrauli had emerged to be the first urban settlement since the beginning 8th century.
Besides the listed monuments, numerous other historical strctures are set within the cultural landscape of Mehrauli most of which remain unexplored and unprotected today. These may include Minars, Mosques and Domes, Shrines, Tombs, Forts, Gates, Burz, Havelies, Dargahs, Hindu Temples, Jain temples, Horse stables Ponds, step wells, Lakes, Jharna, Gardens, Palaces, other historical structures, forests and water bodies.
An attempt has been made to explore these structures of Mehrauli. Identified structures have been described in many historical books and tourist guides. Away from the historical facts, a different description of all these legends associated with these monuments.
