This book aims to examine the different aspects of the life of Santals of Jungle-Mahals through the ages. Tracing the origin and formation of the Jungle-Mahals, it describes in detail the settlement of Santals in the Jungle-Mahals, the agrarian confusion and the plight of the Santals of the Jungle-Mahals.

Examining the factors that led to the Santal Rebellion of 1855, it discusses at length the aftermath of the rebellion which failed miserably, the Meli Movement of 1917, and the Jharkhand Movement in the Jungle-Mahals. Some select documents on the Santals and the Jungle-Mahals have appended as well.
