"This encyclopaedia is meant to deal directly and concretely with various aspects of child care and guidance, it is not merely a question and answer book nor a how-to-do-it book. It is felt that those who have to deal with children day by day need two kinds of help that they can get from books. The first is to find a clear account of some particular problem and some immediate suggestions for procedure. In this way the book does answer many questions, and in many cases it tells both what to do and how to do it. But the explanations and discussions and practical suggestions constitute what we may call short range aid. A second kind of help is needed to fit new ideas and new procedures into the parent’s background. It is hopefully expected that this encyclopaedia will bring to parents and all who deal with children a better understanding of their tasks as well as a satisfaction in working and living with children."
