The demand of horticultural produce for internal market as well as for export is on rise. There is an urgent need to increase the production and productivity of horticultural crops. Microprogagation is most widely used commercialized global application of plant biotechnology in horticulture. In vitro propagated plants of banana, strawberry and many other ornamental crops have become a commercial reality. However, micropropagation of number of horticultural crops is still confined to research laboratories. The book begins with a concise review of approach and strategies of commercial micropropagation. The state of art of micropropagation of various horticultural crops viz; tropical and subtropical fruits, temperate fruits, vegetables, ornamental crops, spices, plantation crops and medicinal plants have been highlighted in the book. There success stories of micropropagation viz; banana, orchid and potato have been described in details. The book covers various aspects of micropropagation like somatic embryogenesis, somaclonal variation, photoautotrophic micropropagation, acclimatization, physical factors, explant and problems associated with micropropagation. The economic considerations and Government’s role in boosting the micropropagatiion industry have been described in two different chapters. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Maneesh Mishra
Dr. Maneesh Mishra is currently working as Scientist, Sr, Scale (Horticulture) in the biotechnology lab at Central Institute of Sub Tropical Horticulture, Lucknow. Dr. Mishra has a decadae of experience in the field of micropapgation of horticultural crops. He served as Scientist at ICAR Research complex for NEH Region, Meghalaya and was involved in micropropagation and evaluation of micropropagated Citrus plant material. He also developed micropropagation protocol of many ornamentals. He is presently working on micropropagation of important sub-tropical fruits (mango, guava, litchi, aonla and bael). He has successfully operated research projects on biotechnology funded by DBT and National Agricultural Technology Project (NATP). Dr. Mishra has 60 research publications to his credit. He is member of many scientific societies.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ramesh Chandra
Dr. Ramesh Chandra is currently Principal Scientist & Head. Crop Improvement & Production Division at Central Institute for Sub Tropical Horticulture, Lucknow. He has over 30 years of experience in micropropagation, in vitro conservation & molecular biology of potato, mango, guava, papaya, litchi etc. he was instrumental in initiating & shaping potato biotechnology at Central Potato Research Institute. Shimla and initiated biotechnology research at CISH, Lucknow. Dr. Chandra has undergone tissue culture and molecular biology training at Peru, Phillippines and China as visiting scientist. He worked with John Dodds, Tissue Culture Specialist of International Potato Centre, Lima, Peru on potato micropropagation and in vitro germplasm management. He has almost 125 research publications including a book on Comprehensive Potato Biotechnology to his credit. Dr. Chandra has traveled widely and participated in various national and international conference. He is a life member of many scientific societies and fellow of Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding. He has successfully completed research projects funded by DBT, UPDASP, NATP and running five research projects funded by different agencies.
