Conditioning and Empowerment of Women: A Multidimensional Approach, is an edited volume analysing the status of women in India and the alternative modes of their empowerment. The issue of empowerment is viewed from different dimensions. It deals equally with the theoretical issues relating to empowerment as well as issues involved in practice. It contains articles by well-known feminists like Martha Nussbaum, Bandana Purkayastha, Maitreyi Choudhury, Sutapa Bhattacharya and others. The volume aims to argue that the issue of empowering the women has to be looked upon as a multidimensional issue rather than from one particular dimension.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Asha Mukherjee
Asha Mukerjee (Dubey), (b. 1955) Ph.D. was a student of philosophy at Rajasthan University, Jaipur and subsequently teaching philosophy as Reader at Visva Bharati, Santiniketan. She has been a Post-doctoral Fulbright fellow at Indiana University, Bloomington (1984-85). Her research interests are ethics, logic, social and political philosophy, gender issues and environmental issues. She has published many scholarly papers in several national and international journals. Her publications include Civil Society in Indian Cultures, (edited) Published by The Council for Research in Values and Philosophy, Washington 2001 and Cognition, Man and the World – Perspectives in Jaina Philosophy (Forthcoming), Gyan Publishing House – 2003.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Kumkum Bhattacharya
Kumkum Bhattacharya is a Professor and teaching psychology at Department of Social Work, Visva Bharati, Santiniketan. Her research interets are culture-personality studies, identities and minorities and issues of women. She has published in national and international journals. She has co-authored with three Santhals a book in the vernacular, Saontal: Muktodharaey Probesh. The cover is a scan print of a painting by Rabindranath Tagore from Rabindranath Tagore.
