This volume includes 22 original papers on the subject "Universe of knowledge: It’s development and structure", written by prominent and well known authors in the field of library and information science. The papers included in the four sections broadly cover Universe of Knowledge, curriculum and criteria of relevance; objectives, intellectual basis and inter-disciplinary studies; contents of the paper Universe of Knowledge and strategies, methodology, and instruction and pooling of expertise. The objectives, methodology and content of Universe of Knowledge appended to this volume under the heading ‘recommendations’ will serve as model for L.I.S. Departments in the country and elseware to teach the subject in M.L.I.Sc. programmes. The editors sincerely hope that this volume be of help to teachers of L.I.S. who handle the subject and for the students to understand the scope, methodology and well defined areas which go into the subject. It is true to state that not much literature has been published on the subject and this publication, it is believed, will go a long way in meeting the requirements of L.I.S. teaching and student community and serve as an important contribution to the field of "Universe of knowledge.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR A A N Raju
Prof. A.A.N. Raju is formerly Head, Department of Library and Information Science and Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Osmania University, Hyderabad. Prof. Raju Published seventy five research papers in English and seventy articles in Telugu in LIS professioal journals. He authored and edited fifteen books covering important facets of LIS, both in English and Telugu. he is a regular contributor to Grandhalaya Saravaswamu, the first Indian professional journal in LIS. His works include Handbook of Pseudonymous Authors in Telugu ; DC, UDC and CC: A Study in Comparison; Grandhalaya Vargikarana Sidhantam; History of Library Movement in andhra Pradesh. Grandhalaya Vargikarana Prayoga Dipika; Universal Decimal Classification: A Practical and Self Instructional Manual; Dewey Decimal Classification; Theory and Practice: A Self Instructional Manual, Colon Classification: Theory and Practice: A Self Instructional Manual and Objective Question Bank of Library and Information Science Ability Tests. Prof. Raju has been actively associated with the professional activities, both at local and national levels. He is a life member of ILA, IASLIC, ALSD, IATLIS, APLA and IAIIR. He is also a member of ISKO. He was Vice-President of ILA, IASLIC and President IATLIS and presently Vice-President APLA, Vijayawada. He was member of UGC panel on Library Science for two term. Recipient of IATLIS-Motiwale Best Teacher Award for 1995 and UGc Emeritus Fellowship. Prof. Raju has also been closely associated with LIS programmes of IGNOU, New Delhi, Dr. B.R.A.O.U., Hyderabad and SDLCE of Kakatiya University, Warangal as Councelor, Course Writer and Editor.
