This study intends to evaluate the real socio-economic needs of the tribals. The programmes of tribal development require financial resources, a major part of which is supposed to be contributed by the financial institutions. The suitability of the provision of institutional credit for the socio-economic development of tribals has therefore been addressed while planning this study. A massive field survey carried out in an overwhelming tribal dominated region has provided very useful inputs on which this study is based. The study has been divided in nine chapters. Based on the analysis of the substantial quantitative data and other significant findings arrived at, the author has offered certain conclusions and suggestions which will be very interesting and useful for those who are working in the areas of tribal and rural development and also for policy makers.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Y.L. Das
Dr. Y.L. Das, In charge, Training Deepayatan, SRC for adult Education, Patna, took his M.A. in Economics from Mithila University, Darbhanga and Ph.D. from Magadh University, Bodh-Gaya. He has worked in various prestigious research projects of A.N. Sinha Institute of Social Studies, Patna (sponsored by International Labour Organisation, World Bank, GOI, GOB etc.) as Senior Research Officer / Research Officer (in supervisory capacity) for two decades. He has published over two dozen research papers in reputed journals. He has presented papers in a number of National Seminars / Conferences in Bihar and other parts of the country including Conferences of Labour Economics held at Patna (1988) and Delhi (1993). He is an author /co-author of several research reports. He has delivered about a dozen radio-talks on various contemporary socio-economic issues since last 7-8 years at All India Radio, Patna. His area of interest covers Rural Economics, Tribal Problems, Agricultural Economics, etc. He has been engaged in social sector planning, monitoring and undertaking the research and evaluation studies independently.
