Sustainable Urban Development

This book is intended to provide an insight into different aspects of urban development with a view to ensuring sustainability, without which urban development could be counter productive. The authors of different papers have highlighted the significance of sustainable development in the urban context and have suggested measures to achieve it. These include, acquisition of new managerial skills and community participation for optimum utilization of scarce resources; formulation of appropriate strategies in the context of local situation; systems of delivery in respect of shelter and infrastructure; resource mobilisation, through active involvement of private sector and fostering public-private partnerships; elimination of urban poverty; policy reforms for capacity building of urban institutions; role of legislation; economic and industrial development without jeopardising the environmental conditions; proper interface between government and non-governmental organisations, improvement of hygiene and sanitation by adopting affordable methods of disposal of waste and its recycling; new orientation to training programmes and dissemination of information on various aspects of sustainable urban development. The above are indicative approaches for achieving sustainable urban development which this publication seeks to propogate.
