The importance of urban renewal is being realised in India in recent years. The city is a living organism and, therefore, it has its lifecycle of birth, growth and decline. If cities are places of tensions and strain, they are also the centres of civilization and culture. Decline of the city warrants action by policy-makers and planners to provide a living environment to the humans. Hyderabad, a four centuries old city, has witnessed ups and downs in administrative and physical aspects. Many factors contributed to the decline of old city of Hyderabad. The present study examines such factors as well as the institutional arrangements made to overcome it. Renewal policies and the strategy adopted in Hyderabad for its development is discussed in this book elaborately. Besides, the citizens’ perceptions on the renewal strategy have also been recorded. It is hoped that the study would succeed in making a strong impact on all concerned policy-makers, academicians, researchers and implementing agencies in the urban centres throughout the country.
