Born on November 14, 1942 to an orthodox family at Guwahati (Assam), Dr. Indira Goswami is a prolific story-writer turned novelist. Her maiden name is Mamoni Goswami. She has enriched Indian literature by mapping pathetic plots with a human angle. After the Sahitya, Katha and other awards, she was rightly conferred the 36 Jnanpith Award for the year 2000, the highest literary award in India. She has been awarded Padamshree recently. Her works are being translated into different Indian languages, including Punjabi and Hindi. She did a comprehensive research on the Ramayana at Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh. She joined the Department of Modern Indian Languages and Literary Studies, University of Delhi as a lecturer of Assamese. Now, she is a Professor in the department. Once she headed this department too. The writer, known for her bold spirit, however, maintains she would not budge an inch from her perceptions in her novels. A humanist to the core, she is touched to see all kinds of afflictions suffered by humanity. But she believes, for most of his afflictions man is himself to blame and, hence, he can only set things right.
