The stories in this volume are translations by the author from his original Bangla. In form and structure, these may be described as consciously conventional—each with a beginning, a middle and an end –as prescribed long ago by Aristotle. The locales range from villages in Bangladesh to cities abroad. Yet, all the stories are spun around the life and death hope and despairs, aspirations and frustrations of the ordinary men and women of Bangladesh during the war of Independence in 1971 and the years following. These are stories of persons caught in the process of political turmoil and social transition in Bangladesh. They transcend the confines of parochialism and portray the emotions and conflicts that are universal.
