The book deals with the tragedy of Partition and the Post-Partition mess that our rulers have created and perpetuated. Partition was the result of the Muslim League’s false propaganda poisoning the minds of the Indian Muslims with the slogan of "Islam in Danger" follies of the Congress leaders, and the "Divide and Rule" policy of the British Government. It did not solve even the basic problem of Hindu Muslim animosity as communal discord and disharmony (and even riots) have continued to persist, resulting in colossal wastage of the nation’s precious time, energies and scarce resources. Post-Partition India has also witnessed a deteriorating law and order problem, criminalisation of politics, widespread corruption and nepotism in public life, falling standards of education and efficiency in administration and the vanishing norm of ministerial accountability. The book also focuses our attention on the shocking state of our economy with almost one-third of the population living below the poverty line, denied the basic necessities of food, clothing and shelter. Even after fifty-two years of planning we have failed to provide compulsory and universal primary education to our children, employment avenues to out youth, a uniform civil code to our people, and prohibition of intoxicating drinks and drugs that continue to take a heavy toll of life, year after year. Even the provision of safe drinking water today appears to be a luxury and a distant dream. The author analyses all these maladies the country is suffering from, and in his humble way, suggests a few remedies that may take us out of the wood. The book is thus a sensitive observer’s assessment and portrayal of the grim national scenario that merits attention of all those who feel for their country. Of course the author has also listed a few conspicuous achievements of the country since 1947, which is a matter of pride.
