North-East India has great strategic significance due to its external boundary lines with China, Bhutan, Myanmar and Bangladesh. Its history remained under the dark shadow of mysteries for long, till it got a jolt from the British. Both the plains and hill areas of the region has a conglomerate population divided into a number of tribes and sub-tribes. The British Indian rulers subjugated these tribes mainly because of their land faced international boundary lines. As a policy of appeasement the British Government excluded these tribal people from the main administration stream of the country. In the post independent phase also, the political history of North-East India is full of turmoils, conflicts and bloody clashes between the Government of India and the tribal peoples. This book presents politico-historical account of the North-East India right from beginning to date. It also presents administrative provisions in the area during the British rule and their impact on the present politics of the North-Eastern states. Moreover, the international boundary lines touching the region has always remained controversial. The work presents all these accounts based on personal surveys of the area. Today the region is insurgent prone where numerous militant and anti-national organizations are causing serious threat to national integrity. All these militant organizations have their hideouts in the neighbouring countries. Their guerrilla warfares have created chaotic and anarchic situation. This work not only discusses these incidents but also investigates into the factors responsible for anti-national activities of the militants. The work will greatly serve the purpose of policy makers, historians, defence personnels, administrators, academicians and the readers alike.
