Davanagere, one of the 27 districts of Karnataka State, is located between 13? 48’ and 14?54’ North latitude and 75?54’ and 75?24’ East longitude. It covers an area of 5998 sq. km. Topography and general features have been given at the beginning. Past and present work, forests and vegetation have been given next. It is followed by which forms bulk of the book, a total of 867 angiosperm species belonging to 498 genera and 112 families have been enumerated. The families have been arranged according to Bentham and Hooker’s system with incorporation of recent changes. Under each family key to the genera followed by genus with it’s authority, key to the species and species enumeration is given. All the genera in the family and all the species in a genus are arranged in alphabetical sequence. All the keys are of the dichotomous indented type. The nomenclature is brought up-to-date. Species enumeration is with citation, description, phonological data, duration is flowering and fruiting, distribution in the world and in the study area, locality and field collection number and vernacular names in Kannada language. The book is profusely illustrated with line drawings and colour photographs. An index to the species, genera and families has been given at the end.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR B.K. Manjunatha
Dr. B.K. Manjunatha completed his M.Sc. from Kuvempu University in the year 1994 and Ph.D. in the Department of P.G. Studies and Research in Biotechnology in the year 2003. Presently he is the Head of the Department of Botany, S.R. Nagappashetty Memorial National College of Applied Sciences, Shimoga. He has published many research articles in National and International journals. He has undertaken many projects financed by National Educational Society, Shimoga and brought many research oriented project reports, viz., “Medicinal plants in and around Shimogaâ€, “Pictorial Manual for rare plants of Western Ghats region of Shimoga Districtâ€, “Phytochemical and Pharmacological analysis of Mucuna monosperma, Leucas hirta, Vitex trifolia, Solanum surattens and Vernonia arboreaâ€.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR T Pullaiah
Prof. T Pullah obtained his M.Sc. (1971) and Ph.D. degrees in Botany from Andhra University. He was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at Moscow State University, Russia, during 1976-1978. He traveled widely in Europe and visited Universities and Botanic Gardens in about 16 countries. He joined Sri Krishnadevaraya University as Lecturer in 1979 and became Professor in 1993. He held several positions in the University as Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences, Head, Department of Botany; Chairman, Board of Studies in Botany; Head, Department of Sericulture; Co-ordinator and Chairman, Board of Studies in Biotechnology; Principal, S K University College and Warden, S K, University Hostels. He has published 43 books, 238 research papers and 35 popular articles in Journals of repute. He is the Principal – Investigator of 20 major Research Projects totaling more than a Crore of Rupees funded by DBT, DST, CSIR, UGC, BSI, WWF, GCC, BARC etc. Under his guidance, 45 students obtained their Ph.D. degrees and 34 students their M.Phil. degrees. He is the recipient of Best Teacher Award from the Government of Andhra Pradesh, Prof. P Maheshwari Gold Medal of the Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxanomy. He served as the Vice President of the Indian Botanical Society and presently the Councilor of the same. He served as a member of Species Survival commission of International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).
ABOUT THE AUTHOR V. Krishna
Dr. V. Krishna obtained his M.Sc. degree in Botany, in the year 1986 and Ph.D. on Plant Tissue Culture in 11996. He taught Plant Taxonomy for seven years in S.J.M. First Grade College, Chitradurga and Plant Systematics for four years in P.G. Department of Life Sciences, Kuvempu University. Presently he is working as Reader in the Department of Biotechnology, Kuvempu University, Karnataka. He has successfully guided three Ph.D. students and seven Ph.D. students are working under his guidance. His area of interest is Plant Taxonomy, Medico-botanical exploration and ex situ conservation off threatened and endangered medicinal plants of Western Ghats region of Karnataka.
