The present work of the veteran Indologist Dr. N.N. Bhattacharyya is intended to acquaint the young researchers, teachers and students with the main trends of the studies and researches on different aspects of Indian Buddhism and also with the problems and intricacies involved therein. The results of researches covering a period of no less than 150 years (1825-1975) have been so outlined as to convey to the readers a complete and coherent idea of what has been done and what remains to be done in different branches of Buddhalogical studies. The special merit of this work lies not in the vast bibliographical materials collected in it, but in the author’s consistent and lucid interpretation of the views of eminent Buddhalogists and different schools of Buddhist studies on vital questions connected with the understanding of the subject. Like other works of Dr. Bhattacharyya the present one is also expected to evoke much interest among the readers.
